Total War

Since both 'Il cammino del cinabro' and 'Le chemin du cinabre' are no
longer available, and it has not been published in English yet, this
is how that excerpt you quoted from it, translated in French by us as
follows :

could be translated in English :

"(...) In modern war the elemental (this term must be taken here in
the sense of elementary forces of nature) rages ; the elemental which
is linked to what is 'material', that is to say to a whole of
technical means of an extreme destructive power (the 'material
battles'). It is like an awakened non human force set in motion by
man, which the individual as soldier cannot escape : he must confront
it, he must become the instrument of mechanicity and, at the same
time, resist it: besides physically, spiritually. This is possible
only if one becomes capable of a new form of existence, if one makes
oneself a new human type which, in the middle of situations which are
destructive for any other human type, is able to grasp the absolute
sense of life."
