Evola now expands on his understanding of race in this
chapter entitled “Spirit and Race”.
Evola accepts the traditional tripartite understanding of
man and is thus opposed to the strictly biological definition of race: man is
body, soul, and spirit, and this must be reflected in his conception of race.
He emphatically rejects any conception of racism that would explain the higher
spiritual faculties in terms of biology – he compares this to similar
systems such as Darwinism and Freudianism (and we may add Marxism).
On the other hand, Evola also opposes those who, though
accepting the existence of race from a genetic or anthropological viewpoint, nevertheless
deny its relevance to the spiritual and cultural activities of man. Race is a
profound force that manifests itself both in the body and the spirit. Racial
purity, then, exists when the race of the body and the race of the spirit are
consonant with each other.
Since racial differences manifest spiritually, the Jacobin
ideals of egalitarianism or universal rights are seen to be false. Therefore,
cultural, aesthetic, moral and philosophic forms that are appropriate for one race,
may nevertheless be inappropriate for another.
The race of the soul determines character, inclinations,
attitudes and style. These psychological characteristics of race are not
confined to one race or another, but rather are manifested in the races in
varying degrees, assuming a different signification.
The race of the spirit determines the attitude toward the spiritual,
supra-human, and divine worlds, as expressed in speculative systems, myths,
symbols, and religious experience. In a traditional civilization, these are the
forms of expression appropriate for a given peoples in a given period; the
content of spiritual understanding is identical and objective in its essence.
