This chapter holds the key to
everything Evola. It is clear that he opposes the Enlightenment ideal that
reason and the empirical sciences will create a body of knowledge that every
man can accept – thus resulting in some sort of trans-cultural “Universal”
man.
Opposed to this is the idea of “world
views”, which are specific to civilisations and races. A world view is
the set of presuppositions through which a man sees, thinks about, and acts in
the world. These presuppositions are not arrived at through reason or science,
but are innate. Moreover, in most men, these presuppositions are at best only
dimly recognized, so that he is unaware of the forces and ideas that direct his
life.
But this is precisely the power
of “insight” to which Evola lays claim: to be able to become conscious
– by means of a direct intuition – of such “world views”.
This intuition is not irrational, but rather suprarational. It does not come
from the experimental sciences of the world, since its source is transcendent
to the world. Evola traces it back to race, not in its biological sense, but in
its spiritual sense, from which the biological form is simply the expression.
Since there can be no “universal”
world view, history and politics can be best understood as a clash of world
views. That is why this study is so important. But only if the transcendent
sources are realized, so it does not simply become yet another intra-mundane typology.
