A counterpart to terrorism could be seen in the trend for self-harm as a
political weapon, which seems to have been gaining pace for the last century
- it's summed up by a story just yesterday -
"Hunger strikes, rioting and self-harm are now endemic in Britain's biggest
detention centres as detainees become increasingly desperate about living in
what they claim are deteriorating conditions."

This again happened among the Irish as the 'troscad' and the Indians as
'dharna', and is now popular with Muslim prisoners. Self-immolation has a
long history within religious cults before it became popular with migrants
into Europe. Of course, "living conditions" are only a relative, there is no
evidence to assume that the plight of prisoners, refugees or migrants is now
any worse than at other times in history - apocalyptic political or
religious dogma seem to be responsible, but as always it is part of a larger
trend towards disorder.
