Perun's War Novel of the Wendish Crusade   Topic List   < Prev Topic  |  Next Topic >

Re: Perun's War Novel of the Wendish Crusade

'The Passing Of The Great Race' by M. Grant, to which we have referred in the
past and which, quite oddly, is not mentioned once in 'Il Mito del Sangue',
besides the intrisic overall quality and accuracy of the examination it offers
of the history of the three main European races, is characterised by its ability
to bring into light the close link between racial changes and political changes,
the high level of interaction between these processes. For example, he quite
rightly noted about the Nordic tribes that moved to Roman provinces after the
fall of the Urbs, 'germanising' them :

"(...) incoming Nordics intermarried with the native populations and were
gradually bred out, and the resurgence of the old native stock has proceeded
steadily since the Frankish Charlemagne destroyed the Lombard kingdom, and is
proceeding with unabated vigor to-day. This process has been greatly accelerated
in western Europe by the crusades and the religious and Napoleonic wars. The
world war, now in full swing with its toll of millions, will leave Europe much
poorer in Nordic blood. One of its most certain results will be the partial
destruction of the aristocratic classes everywhere in northern Europe. In
England the nobility has already suffered in battle more than in any century
since the Wars of the Roses. This will tend to realize the standardization of
type so dear to democratic ideals. If equality cannot be obtained by lengthening
and uplifting the stunted of body and of mind, it can be at least realized by
the destruction of the exalted of stature and of soul. The bed of Procrustes
operates with the same fatal exactness when it shortens the long as when it
stretches the undersized."

F. Nietzsche was right to a large extent in claiming that modern Germans are not
of the same bloodline as ancient Germans. As recalled by M. Grant, the whole
German gentry or so was annihilaled in the Thirty Years' War.

Speaking of annihilation with respect to the Wendish crusade, two points should
be underlined : first, the Christian army that was hired to wage this crusade
was primarily composed of two peoples that, a few centuries earlier, had been
christianised by the sword and whose leadership had been literally beheaded in
the process : the Saxons and the Danes. Then, an hybrid German/Slavic culture
emerged from it.
